Dinner last night was interesting. Abah had to leave suddenly on an overnight trip so I decided on Spiralli with Silverbeet Leaves because the picture looked shiny. I’ve had less better reasons before. The only problem was we didn’t have any spiralli and I had no idea what the heck silverbeet was. I texted two Nigella Lawsons and one Jamie Oliver if they knew; none had any clue. Widad tried to discourage me and requested for simple kuey teow but I was stubborn. I usually give up early if I can’t find the ingredients. I guess I was overcome by curiosity. You know the type, it’s the very one that killed the cat.
It wasn’t a complete disaster. I had to make a lot of substitutions. Macharoni instead of spiralli, tomatoes instead of capsicum, mincemeat instead of coppa (dried pork), red onion instead of white (it’s still onion apa) and some weird-looking sayur instead of silverbeet. The sayur looked ALMOST similar to the one in the book, so why not? What flawed logic.
While I was stirring the whole concoction, I was half-curious, half-afraid. I don’t like wasting food. It looked like it was going to be outstandingly horrific. Somewhere down the line I started wailing..before bending over and laughing my head off. The smell from the sauce was awful. Moral of the story is, if the recipe says “silverbeet leaves”, you only use silverbeet leaves and NOT something that looks similar.
The strange thing is it didn’t taste too bad, once you get used to the smell. Luqman and Widad actually finished their portion with no complaints. Won’t be trying that recipe in a while though. Tonight Abah returns, which means…kuah kurma.
