Twilight Zone

What a strange strange week.

I have now found myself suddenly endowed with several responsibilities which I fear I will not be able to carry well. How did this happen? One moment, I’m flying free with the exception of lectures and tutorial work, and the next, I’ve willingly agreed to shoulder some extra weight for the sake of experience…which is supposed to be a good thing.

It does leave a very nice feeling to be trusted enough like this. With trust though, comes expectations to deliver, and I’m just worried I’ll fall short and disappoint. Heck, I’m still trying to figure out why contemptuous damages serves the object of restitutio in integrum…

I went to both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Islamic Performing Arts Concert (IPAC) which was entertaining, in the best sense of the word. The highlights during the Opening Ceremony has definitely got to be both the Tarian Kuda Kepang and Tarian Piring…perhaps for all the wrong reasons. Depends on how you look at it. During the Kepang dance, 2 of the dancers accidently bumped into each other and both of the horses’ heads got stuck together! One of them tried to yank it back but it wouldn’t come off, so he walked offstage (with his head held high) and came back with an extra horse. I wonder if they actually saw that coming? Afterwards, during the Tarian Piring, one of the dancers clumsily dropped both his plates which really would have been comical if I hadn’t felt so sorry for him…but I did laugh, so perhaps I should just stop pretending I’ve got a halo above my head. Yeah, I laughed along with the crowd and clapped in good cheer. Other highlights of the Opening Ceremony can be narrowed down to this: that night reminded me why I love traditional Malay music.

It was a full house on Thursday night during the Closing Ceremony, with the CAC Main Hall filled up completely, and when Ramli Sarip came onstage to perform, I could see why. He gave an astounding performance, one which brought me back to many a memory of a little girl falling asleep in the backseat of a car, with her father singing along to the tunes of yesteryears playing on the radio as he drives back home.

This I must say: the last performance by The Practice comprising of Engineering students from IIU was completely electrifying. They made long-established Jeapordise look like amateurs. It’s a good thing Aisya, Yani, Najia, Aidil and I didn’t leave during the Dikir Barat session before they came on, which IMHO was too long and dragged out for anyone’s comfort. It was one of those ’save the best for last’ occasions. Admittedly, when the band members of The Practice stepped out, I wasn’t exactly clamouring to pay them any attention. They looked like any typical big-shot-band-wannabe and the lead singer was dressed just appropiately enough to go to lectures. He looked like he had wondered onstage accidentally, with his dazed and lazy expression. Then suddenly he opened his mouth, and out came such a strong vocal voice I was immediately hooked. The whole time he captured the audience, he had the audacity to place his hands in his pockets and leave them there throughout! Calling him casual would be an understatement. For the performance his band gave though, that is all forgiven. Don’t even get me started on the drummer…even the Uitm people were jostling to have a look at the raw talent who was so oblivious that he was banging his way into people’s hearts. It seemed like a real gig. Walking back was very uncomfortable though…Forum Perdana had just taken place in the Main Audi a hundred metres away! I tell you, why they organise these things on the same night, I’ll never know.

Aih. Liverpool V Sao Paulo. Can’t wait can’t wait can’t wait.

Enough said here.
