Norwich 2, Man Utd 0. No, you read right. I wonder if this spells out that there’s actual hope for the Malaysian Football Team to enter the World Cup…but lets not get carried away with wishful thinking now. Honestly though, I never thought I would see the day where Norwich would be the team to end Man Utd’s unbeaten run…I can’t help feeling personally proud of them, despite the fact I’m aware the only connection Malaysia has with Norwich City is the sponsor tie. But hey, I’ll take that too. Now about the Malaysian Team itself…well, that’s another story altogether. Don’t misjudge me, I’m a very patriotic person, but even the most enthusiastic, flag-waving, Jalur Gemilang donning citizen can’t deny that our team is in a bad shape. The only thing we can do is shut our eyes, pray for the best and hope we’re still alive on the day they manage to miraculously squeeze into the World Cup…that is, if they do. A big if.
Flipping through the papers today, I realised my knowledge on current issues is simply atrocious. I felt like a downright hermit…it’s just not acceptable to not stay up to date with the going ons around the globe. I liked reading about the unexpected handshakes between world leaders at Pope John Paul II’s funeral who would usually be more glad to wring the snot out of each other, politically speaking. Examples range from the physical-contact-without-violence between te Israeli leader and both the Iranian and Syrian leaders…Tony Blair and Mugabe…Chiraq and Rice…pretty impressive really. I wonder how they did it without breaking each other’s bones. Funny how a funeral can bring people together. Maybe they should do it again sometime…so now all we need is a dead world figure and I have just the perfect man in mind. Go figure.
Another article that caught my eye was about how some Israelis were doing their part to help Palestinians. The 2 people that were mentioned have been rallying to try and make the Israeli people see how a part of Israel doesn’t exist; that it simply goes by the title ‘Occupied Palestine’. One of them, Adi Dagan, started out by going to checkpoints to try and mediate between the Israeli soildiers and Palestinians who’re trying to get through. Can you imagine having to wait for a few hours, just to get to school, or to a relative’s house, or heck, to give birth? Some Palestinian women had to actually give birth at these checkpoints! They’re subjected to the whims and fancies of the Israeli soldiers guarding the checkpoints, most who’re about as old as I am! Adi’s stopped going though, because the experience left her traumatic after seeing a Palestinan child shot by a soldier. Mohamed Ad-Duri, Faris Odeh, Iman Al-Hams, anyone? She’s now focusing on the Israeli wall instead, which she sees as ‘illegal’. Really, it’s people like Adi Dagan and David Keller (the other person) who prove that not all Jews are Zionists, and not all Israelis support the occupation of Palestine. Where does that leave us, the Muslim world? It’s time we start working with these kind of people, regardless of race and religion, with one thing in common, which is to achieve peace.
Before I sign off, I have to say for the record that if you’re hoping for something that’s highly unlikely, drop it. I have wasted my time doing exactly that. Sigh. There’s just no point. So, on this sad note, I’m off to bed.
Enough said here.
